Kuils River mural marks five month countdown to Netball World Cup

Today Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith unveiled the latest Netball World Cup 2023 legacy mural at Sarepta Recreation Centre in Kuils River. This mural marks exactly five months until the Mother City hosts Africa’s first ever Netball World Cup

The 9,5m x 5,2m painting is the seventh of the twelve Netball World Cup legacy murals. The latest mural adds to previously unveiled artworks in Langa, Khayelitsha, Strand, Bellville South, Mitchells Plain and Atlantis.

Marking exactly five months until the tournament, the Kuils River mural was commissioned by MAK10NE, an internationally acclaimed Cape Town graffiti artist.  MAK10NE has always prioritised the responsibility that artists have within communities and he is,  committed to producing murals that inform and challenge. This art piece reflects on the local community and showcases women, netball, sport, Cape Town, and community upliftment. 

The mural beautifies the entrance wall of the Sarepta Sport and Recreation Centre in Kuils River, which has also been upgraded with new floodlights, resurfacing and new lines painted on the netball courts.  

'We are thrilled to be hosting another women's sporting event that is a first for Africa. With a large netball community across the city, the Netball legacy murals are a means for us to ensure that such a momentous event remains top of mind for our residents and allows local communities to participate and benefit from the legacy of this global tournament. The Sarepta Netball Club is one of the oldest registered clubs in the Kuils River area and has developed a number of female and male netball players who have successfully qualified for Provincial tours.' said Alderman JP Smith.

The Sarepta Sports and Recreation Centre is a popular community recreation hub, offering a variety of extra recreational programmes during the week. The Sarepta Netball Club sees a diverse team of 30 players including junior, senior and male members.
